Kattedamernes uven: Er J.D. Vances eget barndomsmareridt forbi?

Mens jeg var syg sidste uge, så jeg “Hillbilly Elegy” på Netflix og skrev lidt noter – hvis noget er uklart, blame it on the stomach ☺. Filmen er baseret på J.D. Vances biografi.

Instruktøren Ron Howard udtalte, at Vance forekom meget moderat.

The enemy of the cat ladies: Is J.D. Vance’s own childhood nightmare over?

While I was sick last week, I watched “Hillbilly Elegy” on Netflix and took some notes – if anything is unclear, blame it on the stomach ☺. The movie is based on J.D. Vance’s biography. Vance, now a vice-presidential candidate for Trump and unpopular for calling Kamala a “cat lady,” grew up in poverty with mental and physical violence. Economically, he is a pattern breaker, but now ridicules “cat ladies,” which has caused a shitstorm. Is he a clone of Trump?

I think Trump doesn’t care about the poor. It’s therefore strange to watch the movie and hear that Vance is supposed to be a clone of Trump. Vance hasn’t turned his back on his roots. What’s going on?

Director Ron Howard stated that Vance appeared very moderate. When they made the movie, the focus was on Vance’s childhood and not his Republican politics. Howard was surprised by Vance’s support for Trump. Link to article: https://variety.com/2022/film/columns/hillbilly-elegy-ron-howard-jd-vance-1235438056/

“Hillbilly Elegy” is about Vance’s harsh upbringing in Kentucky and Ohio. Glenn Close plays the grandmother who takes care of him. The movie is a tearjerker about poverty in the USA and shows how someone who believes in you can change your life.

The grandmother takes Vance home from his addict mother and helps him break out of violence and poverty. The movie also shows how Vance succeeds at Yale thanks to scholarships and hard work, aided by his Indian girlfriend.

The question is whether the American dream holds. Can you escape your upbringing by going to Yale and making new friends? Vance’s grandmother is described as both a monster and a savior. Vance sees her in a different light, and that’s probably the truth about most things in life – they can be seen from different perspectives.

I find it hard to see Vance as a clone of Trump after watching the movie. The director agrees. From a psychoanalytic perspective, it’s interesting to consider whether Vance has resolved his painful childhood or if new challenges await – perhaps triggered by Trump himself.
